How to merge & split table cells

Some table formats, including HTML and LaTeX, allow cells to span multiple columns, rows, or both. In the Tables Generator you can merge and split selected cells by clicking on the respective toolbar buttons (shown below).

Example

The animation below shows how cells can be merged. The merged cell receives the contents of the first (top-left) cell. All merged cells can be split. Alternatively, pressing Ctrl+Z will revert the table to the previous state.
